Back And Shoulder Pain FAQ

back and shoulder

At Lifetime Health and Wellness, our chiropractors, Dr. Synder, Dr. Gilmer, Dr. Eisenhauer, and Dr. Knasky work with thousands of people every year suffering from a variety of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions. Some of the most common problems we see in our patients include back pain and shoulder pain.

How Common Is Back Pain And Shoulder Pain?

Back pain and shoulder pain are among the top 3 types of musculoskeletal pain (in addition to knee pain). As much as 70-80% of the population can be expected to experience at least one episode of back pain in their lifetime. Likewise, in any given year, anywhere from 5 to 50% of the population is expected to experience shoulder pain.

What's Causing My Back Pain?

The most common causes of back pain include:

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Sciatica
  • Disc herniation or disc bulge
  • Muscle strain
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Whiplash

What's Causing My Shoulder Pain?

Common causes of shoulder pain include:

  • Muscle strain (especially of the rotator cuff or biceps)
  • Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)
  • Ligament strain
  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis

Can Back Pain and Shoulder Pain Ever Be Related?

Absolutely. Your shoulder girdle and spine share many muscles, fascia, blood vessels, nerves, and other tissues. Dysfunction in one area can often lead to pain and dysfunction in another area. Plus, incidents like car accidents, sports injuries, and workplace injuries often involve both the back and shoulder.

Sometimes, even an undetected problem in the alignment of your spine can contribute to shoulder pain-- which is why it's important to see a chiropractor in order to ensure all underlying factors are identified and addressed.

Does Chiropractic Care Help Relieve Back Pain or Shoulder Pain?

Yes! Our chiropractors are totally committed to using treatments that don't expose our patients to harmful side effects, adverse reactions, or ineffective outcomes. That's why we employ a variety of natural and non-invasive chiropractic care methodsThese include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments, to restore normal spinal alignment, relieve pressure on the nervous system, and "reset" the pain signals being sent to the brain
  • Acupuncture, to trigger healing, pain relief, and reduced muscle spasms
  • Corrective exercises, to restore muscle strength, endurance, and motor control
  • Massage therapy, to relax and mobilize soft tissue and stimulate tissue healing

We also offer modalities including ultrasound, cold laser therapy, and Kinesio Taping, as well as postural analysis and retraining, to promote tissue healing and prevent recurring pain in your back or shoulders.

No matter what services we implement to help you with your healing, we believe that no two cases of back pain or shoulder pain are exactly alike. Our treatment plans are customized to meet the unique needs of each patient, based on a careful and thorough analysis of a person's health history, lifestyle, and postural imbalances. By addressing symptoms and causes, our chiropractors help promote faster, better, and longer-lasting results.
